The First Freeplay Radio

Our Origins

Freeplay Energy was founded in 1994, following the invention by Trevor Baylis of the ‘clockwork radio’.  Designed to help halt the spread of AIDS in undeveloped areas of Africa the product provided much-needed access to health information and advice.

In 2010 Freeplay became part of the Euro Suisse Group which has extensive interests in the developing world, where Freeplay products have a life changing impact on those who use them.

Today

Freeplay specialises in the design, development, manufacture, and distribution of independently powered products for the 1.3 billion people for whom the electrical grid is simply unavailable or too expensive. We do this by using our core expertise in solar, dynamo, and energy storage technology to create products that are affordable and reliable. Our product range includes Radios/Media Players, Solar Chargers, Solar Lights and Solar Home Systems. All are designed specifically for off-grid applications

In many parts of Africa people stil live in 'energy poverty'

OUR
MISSION

  • To bring affordable clean energy products to people living either temporarily or permanently off-grid.
  • We do this through innovative technology, an emphasis on design and performance and, above all, a deep understanding of our customers.
  • Our products enable the world’s poorest people to have access to clean, renewable power and all who use them to be informed, entertained and safe.
  • We act as a brand with a conscience at all times.

Over 840 million people worldwide live without access to modern energy

They rely on alternatives including kerosene and candles. These are hazardous, hamful to health and expensive.

In Sub-Sharan Africa over 32 million children of primary school age have no access to schooling.

Many children grow up without having acquired even a basic education. This impedes their life chances and ensures a cycle of poverty.
